Walmart vs Trader Joe’s in USA:

Let’s look at some differences between two USA supermarket chains, Wal-Mart and Trader Joe’s.

Background of Walmart and Trader Joe’s

Wal-Mart
The first Wal-Mart store was opened by Sam Walton in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. Wal-Mart has gone on to become the top retailer in the United States of America. Its Supercenters have given a new meaning to the definition of convenience for the shoppers and to the concept of one-stop shops. Its innovative `Every Day Low Prices’ concept has become a popular international phenomenon today.

Wal-Mart stores have made it easy for a family to make the ideal choices, particularly when the families are on a tight budget and still want to pick up healthy foods. Shoppers can stock up with nutritious food from Wal-Mart at affordable prices. Its Food & Celebrations Center helps shoppers plan out their menus. They can find recipes and tips for proper eating. They can also stretch their dollars and prepare for special events or parties. The marketing motor for Wal-Mart Stores has been to save money and live better.

Trader Joe’s

It has 418 specialty stores and half f them are in California. The heaviest concentration of its stores is in the southern part of California. It has locations in thirty eight other states. It was established by Joe Coulombe. Since the past thirty five years, it has been owned by Theo Albrecht, ALDI’s owner. It did well last year, with revenue of twelve billion dollars.

Key points for value comparison

If shoppers walk into Trader Joe’s and do not have a loyalty card, you will find the prices almost thirty per cent higher than a Wal-Mart Supercenter. With a loyalty card at Trader Joe’s, you may find the prices about eighteen per cent higher than at Wal-Mart’s. The reason why most people get turned off by the concept of loyalty cards is because they do not like any records to be kept of the products they buy. In such cases, people are likely to be turned off when they walk in to Trader Joe’s and compare their high prices with those at Wal-Mart’s.

In terms of storing organic foods, both Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart have quite a large selection of these items. In fact, Trader Joe’s has a bigger selection of organic products, albeit, at higher prices.
