A small grocery store was started in Cincinnati by Barney Kroger which turned out to become one of the largest supermarket chains in USA. Kroger Group has diversified into various businesses; it has even set up fuel centers in several locations close to its supermarkets for the grocery shoppers to fill up their gas tanks during their shopping visits. Kroger has thousands of items on its shelves, ranging from necessary grocery staples to organic vegetables and natural foods that are not genetically modified. It is also in the floral business and is considered as the largest florist across the globe.

Harris Teeter
Harris Teeter is owned by the Kroger Group. It operates as a subsidiary. The chain was started by W. Harris and Willis Teeter in 1960 in North Carolina. It operates two hundred and thirty stores along with a fuel center in nine states across USA. It runs retail stores, groceries and dairies in the state of North Carolina and has its base in Matthews, North Carolina. It has a workforce of twenty six thousand people. Its stores are now spread out in three main regions and seventeen districts. The northern region has its base in Fairfax, Virginia and spreads out to North Carolina and Maryland. The central region has its base in Raleigh and spreads out to Delaware. The southern region has its base in Charlotte and spreads out to South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

Key points for comparison
Kroger group has provided grocery shopping services online. Its customers can also place orders to be set aside for pickups. Kroger began its first delivery services in Liberty Township in Cincinnati. The pricing structure at Kroger has given the supermarket giant an edge over its subsidiaries like Harris Teeter. Kroger has a delivery fee of $4.95 for people ordering online on one-time basis and $99.95 for unlimited orders throughout the year. Online shopping options are also offered by Harris Teeter. All major credit cards are accepted by both Kroger and Harris Teeter. The only handicap at Harris Teeter is that it only offers pickup facilities and does not offer delivery services.

Kroger is the second largest retailer in USA while Harris Teeter is the ninety-third largest. Harris Teeter is focusing on reducing prices on many of its items in both Charlotte and Asheville regions after the acquisition by the Kroger Group.
