Wal-Mart
When Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962, its beginnings were modest. It began as a small discount store. The retailer grew in strength after its incorporation seven years later and opened many thousands of stores in the United States of America. It has also expanded all over the world. It has created a seamless experience for its loyal customers by allowing them the convenience to shop anywhere and at any time through its online shopping facilities. They can even shop through their mobile devices with its mobile apps. It has brought tremendous value to its customers. It has a workforce of over a million people in USA alone.

As per its founder, Sam Walton, the secret of successful Wal-Mart retailing is to offer its customers what they need. It offers a vast assortment of quality food products and merchandise at low prices. The customers are guaranteed satisfaction when they buy from Wal-Mart. For those who visit the stores personally, they are recipients of knowledgeable service with free parking facilities and convenient hours to make their shopping experience a pleasant one.

SAFEWAY
Safeway is a supermarket chain in USA. It was bought over by investors in private equities recently in January 2015. Cerberus Capital Management merged with Albertsons supermarkets and brought along two thousand two hundred stores and over a quarter of a million employees, making Safeway the third largest chain in North America after Wal-Mart and Kroger.

The main operational base of Safeway is the central and the western part of the United States. There are few stores which are located on the Eastern Coast and the Mid-Atlantic area. Safeway has its headquarters in Pleasanton, California (Source: Safeway Wiki).

Key points for comparison

The supercenters of Wal-Mart have always been a focus of the pricing studies as a whole range supermarket chain since the studies began about thirteen years ago.
