Let’s look at some differences between the two supermarket chains, Aldi and Albertsons in USA.

Aldi
Aldi was started by the Albrecht brothers in 1946 in Germany when they controlled the grocery opened by their mother in Essen. They built that store into one of the biggest retail establishments in Germany from its stature as a small provincial grocery shop. It came to be known as a store that offered low prices. The name `Aldi’ was coined as a combination of Albrecht and Diskont. Aldi has spread all over the world and in the United States; it has more than a thousand stores spread over thirty two states. It has become famous for its policy of `everyday low prices’ which went on to ignore the traditional multi-buying offers of the kind of buy one and get one free. Aldi also concentrated on its own exclusive brand products that account for more than seventy per cent of its sales.

Albertsons
It was started by Joe Albertson in Boise, Idaho in 1939. It went on to become the largest food store in Idaho. It was also recognized as the finest food store in the state for the perquisites it offered to the shoppers in the form of free parking, ice cream shops and refund against bad quality guarantees. Today, it has expanded all over the country and has acquired Greater All American Markets which is also a small supermarket chain that flourished in the Orange County in California. About a couple of months ago, Albertsons also acquired Safeway Inc.

Key points for comparison
Albertsons, even with all its price cuts, will not be able to match the low prices of Aldi. The supercenters and all discount stores have become highly competitive in their pricing. Shoppers have also become start on where they should head to save some money for themselves without compromising too much on the quality of food products they are buying.

Aldi’s rock bottom prices are not only giving Albertsons a scare but it will make Walmart’s rates also look high. Aldi’s food basket will be almost 20% cheaper than Walmart and about 32.5% cheaper than Albertsons.

Shoppers will head towards Albertsons only if it is an issue of location and convenience of proximity and when the discount deals offered by the store are good. Their deals on meat products such as pork ribs, chicken and sirloin steaks on Tuesdays are good. Here is an interesting video review of the Albertsons supermarket.
