Fashion is a way of expressing what you wear and carry with you in terms of taste and etiquette. It refers to the way people dress and behave in a defined age. It is an aspiration for achieving ideals and projecting a certain image in society. It can be defined as a phenomenon that is psychological and it is invariably used as a means for creating social boundaries.

Fashion is a popular style that is practiced in clothing, accessories, footwear and furniture. It is a habitual and a distinct trend in the style in which people dress. It can be regarded as one of the crucial components in an individual’s culture that affects all aspects of his or her life. It becomes a symbol of communal prestige and a medium of individual expression. People communicate through their fashionable styles in society.

Fashion Industry
This industry is a modern age product. About a century and a half earlier, the clothes were mostly custom tailored. They were handmade for people either at their homes or on order from tailors and dressmakers. The rise of new technologies in the mid twentieth century such as the sewing machines and factories, retail outlets for clothes and fashion statements became prolific and departmental stores came into being. Clothes began to be mass produced in sizes that were standard and they were sold at fixed prices.

Today, fashion industry is a globalised one; clothing may be designed in a particular country and manufactured in another. Textiles are sold now on worldwide basis. For example, an English fashion firm may source its fabrics from China and have the clothes manufactured in Bangla Desh and shipped to a warehouse in South Korea.

Four Levels of the Industry
For fashion aficionados, it is important to note that the fashion industry is made up of four levels. The first is the raw materials of textiles and fibers that get produced; the second is the production of goods by designers and manufacturers; the third level is of sales through retailing and the fourth level is the promotion of fashion by means of advertising and business promotion. The levels consist of generic sectors such as textile designing, production, fashion designing and manufacturing; fashion retailing, marketing, merchandising, fashion shows and marketing.

Attitudes and Choices that make up a Fashion Statement
Attitude towards clothing by an individual may be a very personal one. Every person tries to express his or her inner self through fashion. Clothing will involve everything ranging from underclothes to tops and over-garments and from readymade ones to those that are ordered. Much thought goes into making the right choices when it comes to clothing and dressing for a particular occasion.

The young generation, especially, are conscious about what they wear because they feel that they are what they wear and that their wardrobe is a part of themselves. They want to be unique and would like to stand out in a crowd while still following the crowd and fitting in.

The bottom line is that fashion and styles will prevail in any age when they are within the boundaries of decency and modesty and when they extend a chaste appearance to the users.
