Established in 1955, Lufthansa is a German flagship airline which has its head quarters in Cologne, its main hubs at Frankfurt and Munich and a secondary hub at Dusseldorf. The name Lufthansa is a combination of ‘Luft’ the German word for air and ‘hansa’, the Latin word for guild and it is a member of Star Alliance.

Travel by Lufthansa offers a choice between four classes namely First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy and each comes with its own set of amenities. First Class is the most luxurious wherein travellers have the privilege of separate check-in counters, meals on demand and lounge facilities at several airports. Business Class travellers also enjoy special amenities while tjhose in the Economy Class are offered good entertainment facilities. Its frequent flyer programme is named as Miles & More and it is affiliated to First Class, Senator and Business Lounges.

National airline of Italy, Alitalia was originally founded in 1947 and boasts of a fleet size of 118 aircrafts flying to a little over 100 destinations. While its head office is located at Fiumicino, which is in Rome, Italy, its main hub is the Roman Airport of Leonardo da Vinci and secondary hubs are the two airports in Milan namely Linate and Malpensa. The word Alitalia is derived from two Italian words namely alli, meaning air, and italia, meaning Italy.

Service is segregated into four classes in Alitalia’s cabins namely Classica, Classica Plus, Ottima and Magnifica. Amenities in Classica or Economy and inclusive of serving of a snack and beverage and provision of TV screen on each seat. Classica Plus is the premium economy and it offers a little more space and allowance for extra baggage for its travellers. Business Class is referred to as Ottima and travellers opting for this mode are entitled to a separate check-in counter as also accessibility to VIP lounges. Magnifica is the Business class for long-duration flights and is inclusive of special benefits like new catering service, new upholstery and amenity kits and flat-bed seats. Frequent-Flyer programme of Alitalia is referred to as ‘MilleMiglia’, an Italian word for thousand miles and members can avail privileges such as access to clubs and free tickets across the Sky Team Alliance.
